Enabling Java in Internet Explorer

Okay, take a deep breath, because Internet Explorer is the complicated one.  Although you won’t necessarily need to do all four steps, the bit about restarting your browser after each instruction is important - it is sometimes not enough to merely refresh the page.

1.  Firstly, make sure you’ve downloaded and installed the latest version of Java.  You can get it from http://www.java.com/getjava.  After doing so, restart your browser and try again.

2. Look at the toolbar at the bottom of your browser.  Can you see a cog with a red “no entry” circle in front of it?  If you can, click on Tools > Manage Add-ons > Enable / disable add-ons.  Make sure both the Sun Java Console and the Java Runtime Environment are enabled.  Now restart your browser and try again.

3.  Click on Tools > Internet Options and then select the Advanced tab.  Find Java in the settings list, and make sure the option underneath this has a tick next to it (it will say something like “Use JRE ... for <applet>”).  Click okay.  Restart and try again.

4.  Click on Tools > Internet Options and select the Security tab.  Click on the “Custom level” button in the “Security level for this zone” box.  In the next window, scroll down the list of settings, and right near the bottom your will see a “Scripting” section.  Next to “Active scripting”, enable the “Scripting of Java applets”, then keep clicking okay until all the windows are closed.  Now restart your browser and try again.

If none of the above works, and you are using a computer on a network, than it may be your network administrator has disabled Java from running in your browser.
