What Are Precision Teaching Worksheets?
Precision teaching is a short, daily fluency routine. A child reads (or writes) the same set of target items for one minute, the adult counts how many were correct, and the score is recorded each day so you can see progress across the week. The worksheet itself is often called a precision teaching probe sheet: a grid where a small number of target words, sounds, letters or numbers are repeated in a random order.
This generator builds that probe sheet for you. It shuffles your items into a grid and adds a timing chart for Monday to Friday underneath, so one printed sheet covers a whole week of practice.
How to Make a Precision Teaching Worksheet
- Enter a title, for example the child's name or the target set ("Phase 3 tricky words").
- Type your target items in the word list box, separated by spaces or one per line. These can be high-frequency words, phonics sounds, letters, numbers or number facts.
- Choose the repetitions (1 to 20): how many times each item appears in the grid. More repetitions give a bigger grid.
- Create the worksheet, then print it or save it as a PDF. Create it again for a new random order.
Ideas for Precision Teaching Probe Sheets
- Reading: 4 to 6 high-frequency or tricky words the child is learning this week.
- Phonics: graphemes such as sh ch th ng, or a set of CVC words.
- Spelling: the week's spelling words, read first and then written.
- Maths: numbers to recognise (11 to 20), number bonds or times table facts.
Precision Teaching FAQ
How long should a precision teaching session last?
The timed part is usually one minute. Including a quick practice of the items first and recording the score, a session takes about five minutes a day.
How many items should a probe sheet have?
Keep the set small: around 4 to 6 new items, sometimes mixed with a few the child already knows. The repetitions setting then fills the grid with those items in a random order.
When should I change the words?
Move on when the child reads the sheet accurately and quickly on several days in a row (many schools set a target number of correct items per minute). Then make a new sheet with the next set of items.
Is the precision teaching worksheet generator free?
Yes. You can create, print and save as many precision teaching worksheets as you need.
