The two main ways to express a fraction as a decimal are:

  • Use a calculator!
  • Use long division.

The simplest method is obviously to use a calculator. It's quick, and easy. To show a fraction as a decimal you divide the top number of the fraction (the numerator) by the bottom number (the denominator) and the result is the fraction as a decimal.

Let's look at a quick example of this by using the fraction 58 and converting it to decimal using a calculator.

5 ÷ 8 = 0.625

As you can see, in one quick calculation, we've converted the fraction 58 into it's decimal expression, 0.625.

If you don't have a calculator, you can show a fraction as a decimal using good old fashioned long division instead.

  0.625
8 5.000
  0
  5.0
  4.8
   20
   16
    40
    40
     0

For this, we used 5.000 to allow us to work through the long division problem correctly.

There are other methods for converting fractions into a decimal version but it's very unlikely you will ever use something that is not a simple calculator or a long division method.
