The two main ways to express a fraction as a decimal are:

  • With a calculator!
  • Using long division.

The simplest method is obviously to use a calculator. It's quick, and easy. To show a fraction as a decimal you divide the top number of the fraction (the numerator) by the bottom number (the denominator) and the result is the fraction as a decimal.

Let's look at a quick example of this by using the fraction 36 and converting it to decimal using a calculator.

3 ÷ 6 = 0.5

As you can see, in one quick calculation, we've converted the fraction 36 into it's decimal expression, 0.5.

If you don't have a calculator, you can show a fraction as a decimal using good old fashioned long division instead.

  0.500
6 3.000
 -0
  30
 -30
   00
  -0
    000
   -0
     0000
    -0
      0

(Note: for the purpose of this article, we always calculate to 3 decimal places)

With the long division method, the whole number at the top is the answer, and the bottom number is the remainder:

0

Remainder: 0

There are other methods for converting fractions into a decimal version but it's very unlikely you will ever use something that is not a simple calculator or a long division method.

Why Convert 3/6 to a Decimal?

We often find ourselves wanting to convert a fraction like 3/6 into a decimal because it allows you to represent the fraction in a way that can be easily understood.

In your daily life you will find yourself working with decimals much more frequently than fractions, and this teaches your brain to understand decimal numbers.

So, if you need to do any form of common arithmetic like addition, subtraction, division, or multiplication, converting 3/6 into a decimal is a good way to perform those calculations.

Another benefit to showing 3/6 as a decimal is as a comparison. It's very easy to compare two decimal numbers and see which is greater and which is smaller, but when you have fractions with different numerators and denominators it is not always immediately clear when you compare then.

Both fractions and decimal numbers have a place in math though, because fractions are easy to multiply, can express larger decimal numbers easier, and it's important to learn and understand how to convert both from fraction to decimal, and from decimal to fraction.
