The simple rule to remember whenever you want to find a fraction of an amount is to divide the amount by the fraction's denominator, and then multiply that answer by the fraction. For this example let's try and calculate 25 of 40.

First we take the amount, 40, and divide it by the denominator, 5:

50 ÷ 5 = 8

Next, we take the answer, 8, and multiply it by the numerator, 2:

8 × 2 = 16

In this example, 2/5 of 40 is 16.

Sometimes, you might want to show your answer as another fraction. In that case, we can do the following.

First, we take the whole number and turn it into a fraction by using 1 as the fraction denominator: 401.

Next, we multiply the numerators and the denominators of the original fraction, 25, and the new fraction, 401:

2 × 40 5 × 1 = 80 5

This leaves us with a fraction answer of 80/5, which if you were to simplify down to its lowest terms, is the same as the answer we got originally, 16.
